ZNU Alumnus Develops EUV Source

    On January 16, the news was announced by CCTV Morning News that China hadsuccessfully developed the world’s first extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) free electron laser device—the Dalian Light. Under extreme-ultraviolet light, most atoms and molecules can be detected in a certain region. Therefore, the Dalian Lightcan be used to observephysical and chemical processes that are related to combustion, atmosphere, and clean energy.

  The inventor of the worlds brightest extreme-ultraviolet source and the director ofteams of related light sources in Dalian is Yang Xueming,the first alumni academician from Zhejiang Normal University and an adjunct professor. He is currently the deputy director of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics at Chinese Academy of Sciences.

  Yangsaid that the biggest usage ofextreme-ultraviolet light was to act as a sensible sensor for detectinggas-phase molecules. Extreme-ultraviolet light can be applied to many fields and has great prospects in scientific research and in the science and technology that support national defense.

  Yang Xueming has alwaysworked at the forefront of scientific research. In his view, the biggest joy is not obtained by winning prizesbut from resolving major problems. Yang Xueming suggests that young students should findtheir own interests and pursue them, rather than be compelled to choose a field by others.
