On March 13, The Daily Telegraph,a mainstream British newspaper witha history of hundreds of years,   simultaneously printed and published an article online entitled Britain is helping us build a new Silk Road, written by Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese Ambassador to the UK.

According to the article, the Silk Road has played an important role in promoting commercial and cultural exchange between the people and countries of the East and West for over 2,000 years. Further, it continues to inspire people to seize theopportunity of the time and promote common development. Since President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road initiative in 2013, great achievements have beenmade. In January of 2017, the China Railway Express, which started from Yiwu, an eastern Chinese city, first arrived in London; this demonstrates that the Belt and Road has been extended to the extreme west of Europe.

The UK is Yiwu’s largest export destination country in Europe. Ranging from traditional Christmas products to daily household items, “Made in Yiwu” has registered a massive presence in the British counters of retail chain stores. Meanwhile, Yiwu’s demand for imported British goods has also increased year by year, and an increasing number of British goods have been distributed throughout China from Yiwu. The launch of the China Railway Express has vital significance for promoting trade betweenYiwu and the UK. Trade between the two nations surely has a brighter future.
