International Seminar at YICC
Post Time:15/06/2017 Browse Number:

On the afternoon of June 5, Chin-An Tan, a tenured professor at Wayne State University and distinguished recipient of the Thousand Talents Plan, chaired an invited workshop on pedagogical models for engineering instruction in higher education at Yiwu Industrial Commercial College’s Wenmei Hall. Teachers and students from the Education Supervision Department, the Student Enrollment and Employment Office, and the College of Mechanical and Electrical Information, participated in the workshop.

Doctor Chin-An Tan gave his presentation from four perspectives, namely, Chinese-American educational foundations and cultural elements, “major challenges” in engineering education, active learning and learning-oriented teaching methods, and practical advice on the construction of engineering programs at YICC. The workshop consisted of Chinese-English bilingual lecturing and a Q&A session.

The seminar began with a discussion about three concepts: Lecture, Teach, and Educate. Doctor Chin-An Tan suggested that the attitude an instructor projects while teaching is of particular importance, since it can directly influence students’ learning processes. Then, he put forward a question for the audience: “What are the differences between western and Chinese education systems?” Later, he stated his educational ideas: that failures are allowed in education; that education ought to provide students with ample opportunities; that education needs to focus on details and practice; that innovation makes the difference; that the development of students’ critical thinking skills should be promoted; that education should be people-oriented; and that the construction of cross-disciplinary integrated course systems is necessary.

Professor Chin-An Tan is the founder of the summer international cross-cultural courses at Zhejiang University of Technology and Wayne State University in America and is devoted to the reform and innovation of both China’s engineering education and worldwide engineering education.
