At the invitation of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of Hong Kong, and to promote traditional Wu Opera, Chen Meilan’s original opera team from Zhejiang Wu Opera Academy (Zhejiang Wu Opera Troupe) went to Hong Kong to perform at the 2017 China Opera Festival on June 21. From then until June 26, the 90-person team performed 10 classical selected scenes in Wu Opera, including Mu Guiying, Tale of the White Snake, Three Strikes on Wang Ying, At the White Beach, and Stop the Horse.

This was the sixth time that Wu Opera has been presented in Hong Kong, and it has gained numerous fans and high praise. The performances hit the box office hard: the tickets of the first two shows were sold out two weeks before they went on stage. Shatian Auditorium, which doesn’t usually hold any shows, opened its second floor for Wu Opera and was completely full, and other auditoriums had the same experience.

The cast in the performances was the most impressive ever, including Chen Meilan, the team leader, who once won the Twice Plum Performance Award and the Twice Wenhua Award; Yang Xiayun, one-time Plum Performance Award winner; Lou Sheng and Wu Wenling, Magnolia Award Winners; and Zhou Hongwei, who recently won the New Pine Plan Young Opera Actors Competition of Zhejiang Province.
