On September 29, upon the opening of the 2020 World Yiwuese Conference, the Yiwu government invited officials from the Bureau of Commerce, Market Development Committee, Commodities City Group, as well as representatives from International Businessmen Association and Yiwu Mall, and held a matchmaking meeting of export commerce. This meeting was held in hopes to encourage Yiwu entrepreneurs to embrace overseas markets.

Yiwu boasts the largest small commodities market in the world. As the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus challenges global commerce, Yiwu as the “world supermarket” also bears the pain the pandemic brings. As the markets in America and Europe have been hit hard by the pandemic, those in Africa and the Middle East have become a strategic redirection for Yiwu.

At the matchmaking meeting, companies like Startimes International Investment Co., Ltd., Jollychic Information Technology Co., Ltd. which are both dedicated to the development of e-commerce platforms for the African and Middle East markets, were invited with the hope that they could contribute in the promotion of Yiwu products in African and Middle East markets with their professional media communication and cross-border e-commerce systems. Also, some financial methods and products were introduced that could partially ease the pain of occasional setbacks in overseas business.

Markets in Africa and the Mideast are always important business destinations for Yiwu. At present, with a total investment of over 1 billion RMB, the project of Dubai Trade Center in cooperation with DP World is well under construction as planned.

“The government is supporting the establishment of warehouses overseas. According to our survey of over 3,000 business entities, we found those related with forwarding, logistics, and cross-border e-commerce have the most demand for overseas warehouses, especially during the pandemic,” said He Jinfa, general manager of Yiwu China Commodity City Overseas Investment Development Co., Ltd. He further stated that in order to help enterprises turn challenges into opportunities, the group intends to integrate overseas warehousing resources and upstream and downstream trade service capabilities through the development of overseas warehouse franchise. This would move forward exports from Yiwu or even China as a whole. The procurement needs of overseas entities, the sales capabilities of domestic entities, and the service capabilities of trading entities should be accurately matched to effectively improve the efficiency of the international trade cycle.

“In the current layout of global warehouses and markets, Africa and the Middle East are still the main focus for Yiwu. The government will do its best to serve for those in need, especially in the aspects of international market development, trade service advancement, business network construction, and smooth logistics channels,” said Ge Qiaodi, deputy mayor of the Yiwu government.
