Rejuvenation of Zhiying Town

发布时间: 2021-03-03

On February 23, the Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission released the list of the first 11 pilot towns for the rejuvenation project of the ancient towns in Zhejiang Province. The town of Zhiying in Yongkang, Jinhua was selected. In the next three to five years, Zhiying will strive to become a livable and travelable ancient town with booming industry and prosperous culture.

The rejuvenation project of ancient towns is an important task proposed in the 2020 Zhejiang Provincial Government Work Report. Beginning in 2021, the government will select around 10 ancient towns each year. In total it will have about 30 ancient towns for this project. For these pilot towns, the provincial government will provide full support.

Zhiying has a history of more than 1,690 years since its establishment during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). It is the birthplace of the ancient State of Ying (a minor kingdom in eastern China from c. 1030 BC to 646 BC). Throughout history, Zhiying has been the cultural and commercial center of Yongkang, as well as a strategic place militarily.

The ancient construction is still preserved in the old downtown of Zhiying. In particular, there are nearly 100 Ying-era ancestral temples within less than 0.2 square kilometers of the old downtown, and 53 of them remain wholly intact. Such high density of ancestral temples for one surname is rare nationwide.

In recent years, Zhiying has been committed to becoming a famous ancient town, as well as protecting and developing its historical constructions and cultural resources. To date, Zhiying has a total investment of nearly 320 million RMB for the restoration of ancient temples, residences, pavement, facade, drainage system, and infrastructure construction. It has completed the renovation of 14 ancient temples, 15 ancient residences, 15,000 square meters of flagstone pavement, and the stonework covering 2 kilometers of ancient street and an area of 27,000 square meters. The aim is to restore the ancient historical features as much as possible.

A director from Yongkang Municipal Development and Reform Commission stated that during next three to five years, Zhiying will continue to explore more possibilities to improve the protection and development system for historical heritage and excellent cultural inheritance. Historical culture should be promoted alongside modern industries. (Translated by Li Ziyi, edited by Kendra Fiddler)
