|Gert Grobler Attends New Era, New Thinking Conference|
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, to celebrate the course of the past hundred years and to tell the story of the Communist Party of China to the outside world, China Daily, together with the Publicity Department of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and the CPC Jiaxing Municipal Committee, jointly organized the New Era, New Thinking Conference with the theme “Long March from Red Boat.”
Zhu Guoxian, member of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and director of the Provincial Publicity Department; Zhou Shuchun, chief editor of China Daily; and Zhang Bing, secretary of the CPC Jiaxing Municipal Committee, delivered opening speeches. Keynote speeches were also given by invited attendees: Marcos Pires, professor of the Political Economy Institute at São Paulo State University of Brazil; Gert Grobler, senior researcher at the Institute of African Studies at Zhejiang Normal University; Martin Jacques, former senior fellow at the University of Cambridge; Robert Kuhn, chairman of the Kuhn Foundation; Erik Nilsson, senior journalist of China Daily; and Peter Morgan, associate dean of the Business School at University of Nottingham Ningbo.
Speakers of the New Era, New Thinking Conference
Professor Grobler, who is also former senior diplomat at the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation, expounded from the African perspective the significant historical status of the Red Boat on Nanhu Lake. He said that it witnessed the founding of the Communist Party of China and is a carrier of the spirit of the Chinese revolution. The Red Boat Spirit symbolizes overcoming difficulties and challenges, and provides spiritual impetus for the Chinese nation.

Since he has started working at IASZNU in March 2019, Grobler has visited Hangzhou, Yiwu, Wenzhou, among other places. Everywhere he deeply perceived the hard-working, innovative, and entrepreneurial spirit of the people of Zhejiang. He said that Zhejiang’s economic and social development and reform and innovation have achieved great results, which includes great potential in cooperation with African countries.
Referring to China’s current economic, social, and security development, Grobler said that in the new era, the Communist Party of China is facing a crucial leadership task, and the whole society needs to raise awareness, unite and overcome difficulties together. In his speech, he highly praised the Chinese government’s ability to govern and the vitality and resilience of the Chinese people. He firmly believes that the CPC can actively solve the challenges of the times and bring about increased sense of achievement, happiness, and security to the people.
