A particular of the vivid features of buildings

10 meters of width and 50 cm of height, a rich multitude of characters dissimilar in shape and form, the grace of natural elements, the vividness of domestic life and animals, the details of constructions and even of flowing waters under the bridges. All of these are shining elements of papercutting master Lou Xiaoqing’s latest work, “Along the River During the Qingming Festival.” Given the richness of details, it is not a surprise that the Yiwu-native Master Lou took five years to complete this work.

A multitude of shapes and forms

Master Lou Xiaoqing, an inheritor of the intangible heritage of papercutting, explained that she is not the first artist to reproduce a papercutting version of the original painting. Her friends advised her that it was not necessary to spend so much energy on what others had already done, but despite her friends’ suggestions to avoid the challenge of spending energy and time on something some one else had already done, she liked the painting very much and was absolutely determined to contribute with her own representation through papercutting. Such determination is based on her skillful papercutting technique and deep passion for the art.

Little strokes fell great oaks. In addition to her usual work and her participation in papercutting-related events, Master Lou worked relentlessly on this creation during her spare time.

Looking at this work carefully, this papercutting creation consists of millions of cuts carved behind it. For instance, just a simple leaf in the papercutting is a piece made of about 30 cuts.

Behind the refined work: millions of cuts and engravings

Good outcomes come to those who show devotion, and after five years of hard work, Lou Xiaoqing succeeded in completing her creation. “I hope that through this papercutting version of ‘Along the River During the Qingming Festival’ more people will learn of and appreciate papercutting, making this art a bit more popular,” said Master Lou, who also stated she initially took up the scissors for papercutting just as a hobby, but the art has now become part of her daily life, something she cannot part from.
