Int’l Students Working for Pandemic Prevention
留学生助力婺城疫情防控

“Hello, this is Wang An, an international chief from the New Silk Road Volunteer Service Team. Due to the needs of pandemic prevention and control, may I ask you some questions...” Recently, Ngoy Kaseya Joseph (Chinese name: Wang An), an international student from Congo, used English to make “transfer calls” to foreigners in Jinhua who had recently traveled to Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing, and other cities, telling them to self-isolate.

Wang An came to Zhejiang Normal University to study Chinese in April of 2019. Since then, he gave himself this Chinese name.

Since December 2021, confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been found in many places in the province, and the staff of international service centers need to make a large number of transfer calls every day. As the holidays are approaching, people are traveling more frequently, which brings a lot of pressure and challenges to the pandemic prevention work.

Among them, international students in the Xinshi Subdistrict area accounted for more than 85% of the total of Wucheng District, and more than 90% were international students at ZJNU Due to factors such as accommodation conditions and personal living habits, two-thirds of the international students live outside of the campus. Therefore, verifying the information of relevant international residents is of great significance to the pandemic prevention work.

In order to cope with this problem, the Xinshi Police Station has deepened the “Three Services: Wucheng Home Service,” innovated the “New Silk Road Volunteer Service Brand,” and created a “1+1+1” foreign grid microsystem—a community policeman + an international chief + a community worker, under a large grid environment.

The international staff has the advantages of language and cultural familiarity. He is also a policy conveyor, opinion collector, and problem handler for international personnel. He can give timely feedback on the situation and needs of international personnel within his responsibilities as international chief. Wang An actively signed up for international chief and he was one of the first batch of international leaders. To date, he has made more than 60 transfer calls to verify data in the international service center. In addition, he has conducted on-site verification 3 times and played an active role in solving the pandemic prevention problem.

This is not the first time that Wang An has participated in pandemic prevention and control. At the beginning of 2020, as a member of the New Silk Road volunteer service team, he actively participated in the door-to-door inspection service, rotation of pandemic prevention service points, and policy publicity for pandemic prevention and persuasion, working for three months.

In November 2021, Mayoungam Ibrahim Mounir (Chinese name: Wang Yijie), a Cameroonian student who stayed to work in Jinhua after graduation, wanted to rent a house in the hard-working community, but had no choice but to stay at a friend’s house due to his poor Chinese and communication difficulties. In early December, the severity of the pandemic prevention and control situation made it more difficult for him to find a house.

After realizing Wang Yijie’s problems, Wang An reported the situation to the International Personnel Service Management Center of Xinshi Police Station. The manager, Li Xiaoxiao, immediately provided Wang Yijie with appropriate housing information and the landlord’s contact information through the management system. Within a day, Wang Yijie successfully signed the contract and completed registration to rent his favorite house.

In the face of everyone’s praise, Wang An said, “In the beginning, I came here as a volunteer to help my compatriots understand more about the current pandemic situation because they could not make smooth conversation in Chinese, so I signed up. Later, I gradually became an international leader, playing my role in the pandemic prevention and control work. I like my current job.” (By Zhou Jinquan, translated by Zhang Jiajia, edited by Kendra Fiddler)
