On November 18, 2014, the first Yiwu-Xinjiang-Europe (YXE) train of the China Railway Express (CRE) bound for Madrid departed Yiwu on a 13000-kilometer trip. Over the past eight years, Yiwu has participated in the realization of the Belt and Road Initiative and contributed an exemplary model of opening-up.

On the morning of October 11, there was a steady flow of trucks at Yiwu’s railway port. In a container on the customs inspection platform, Yang Jinfeng, deputy chief of the Second Section of Yiwu Customs Supervision, and his partner Liu Weimin checked a batch of new energy vehicles ready to be exported to Germany. The batch of goods is scheduled to reach the German city of Duisburg in 14 days via a YXE CRE train.

Over the years, an increasing quantity of goods have been exported through YXE trains. This has made Yang Jinfeng and Liu Weimin quite busy. According to Yang, typologies of exported goods consist of products with higher value than they are historically used to. These valuable items include photovoltaic panels, automobile spare parts, and intelligent equipment. The locations the goods originated from have gradually expanded from Yiwu to Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Shaoxing, and other cities in Zhejiang, as well as Shanghai, Fujian, Guangdong and other provinces.

According to statistics, since its debut in 2014, YXE trains have maintained a rapid growth. They have reached a cumulative round-trip operation of 4500 trains departed from the Yiwu Platform, and they have delivered over 370000 TEUs.

The Yiwu-Kadıköy line of the China Railway Express (CRE) freight train was launched on September 30. This was the 18th line launched by the Yiwu platform of the Yiwu-Xinjiang-Europe (YXE) CRE railway system.

In recent pandemic years, YXE CRE trains have been running against the recessing trends of normal operation by continuously adding special trains for the shipment of epidemic prevention materials, automobile parts, photovoltaic panels, and other products customized according to the demand of foreign markets.

Toward the West, YXE CRE trains travel along the Silk Road Economic Belt and promote the exchange of needed goods between countries and relive the tradition of the ancient Silk Road. Toward the East, these trains ship goods to the sea-rail intermodal lines. Both directions are making Yiwu a vital link for the common development of China and the world.
