Pan’an’s Intangible Culture: Tea Market Temple Fair
炼火、赶茶场、迎大旗—— 古越腹地的“龙争虎斗”

For the people of Pan’an, especially the natives of the village of Yushan, there is an event that everyone excitedly awaits every year, even more than Spring Festival, that is Tea Market Temple Fair.

This festival is particularly popular in Yushan as a folk event based on the legend of the god of tea, Xu Xun. In short, the fair is a gathering centered on the tea trade. It originated not only to commemorate the god of tea, but also for the market-related activities.

During the temple fair, people in Yushan and surrounding areas rush to the ancient tea farm, and the merchants in neighboring areas set up stalls here. The scene is very loud and lively. “Every time around the temple fair is the busiest in Yushan and even Pan'an, when tens of thousands of people come here,” said Wei Maohua, a member of the Yushan Tea Farm Temple Management Committee.

The fair is held twice, once in spring on the 15th day of the first lunar month, and once in autumn on the 15th day of the tenth lunar month. Among the many intangible cultural heritage items in Pan’an, the Tea Market Temple Fair is particularly important. It is a traditional folk cultural event with the broadest participation, the strongest sense of participation, the deepest historical and cultural connotation, and the richest variety of folk-art performances. The event can be understood as an art festival and as a big fusion and gathering of outstanding cultural programs. (Translated by Marco Lovisetto, edited by Daniel Haws)
