发布时间: 2022-11-07

The Institute of African Studies of Zhejiang Normal University (IASZNU) held an international academic seminar on “President Hassan’s Visit to China and the Prospect of China-Africa Relations after the 20th Party Congress.” The seminar brought together former diplomats, scholars, think tanks, experts, media, and entrepreneurs from China and Tanzania to participate in the meeting. The Chinese and African scholars attending the meeting said that with a long history of friendship between China and Tanzania, Hassan’s visit will breathe renewed life into China-Tanzania cooperation in the fields of the digital economy, foreign direct investment, education, and humanities.

Liu Hongwu, the dean of IASZNU and a Distinguished Professor of Chang Jiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, presided over the conference. Liu, who has been concerned about Tanzania for more than 20 years, took the lead in making a guiding interpretation on the significance, purpose, and outcome of the seminar, with particular attention on President Hassan’s visit to China.

The seminar was supported by the Center for Chinese Studies of the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam, the Tanzania Research Center of the Communication University of China, and the China-Tanzania Investment Promotion Association.

Gou Haodong, a member of the China Public Diplomacy Association and former Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, believes that China-Africa cooperation has not only benefited the Chinese and African people, but also contributed to building a more harmonious and beautiful world. The Tanzam Railway is a symbol of this China-Africa cooperation.

Professor Humphrey Mosey, director of the Centre for Chinese Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, put forward his suggestions on the modernization and capacity enhancement of the Tanzam Railway and the future planning and cooperation of the “Mama Samia Bridge” vision project. The project will link the mainland and Zanzibar. He believed that through the joint efforts of China and Tanzania, Sino-Tanzanian relations will leap to a new level.

Nyerere, Chair Professor at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, said that China and Tanzania have unlimited possibilities in cultural and economic diplomacy. Educational exchanges have played an important role in promoting China-Tanzania cooperation. At present, Swahili is widely studied in Chinese academic institutions which paves the way for the in-depth cooperation of the China-Tanzania economy and Chinese investment in Tanzania.

Since its establishment, IASZNU has taken the study of African countries and China-Africa relations as the foundation of regional African studies. This seminar is also another exploration and attempt by the institute to cultivate talents for China-Africa pragmatic cooperation and to serve the national strategy through academic research.

IASZNU has conducted long-term comprehensive studies on key African countries, focal countries, and strategy-supported countries. As a key country of regional African research in Zhejiang Normal University, Tanzania has also achieved a series of preliminary results over the years. Blue Africa and The Development Process of Contemporary Tanzania are works that have been published. In 2017, IASZNU also established the East Africa Regional Country Research Center. (By Wang Titi & Shan Min, translated by Zhang Jijaia, edited by Daniel Haws)
