The much anticipated 22nd World Cup in Qatar will start on November 21. Although the Chinese national football team did not have the chance to make an appearance, Yiwu-made goods “kick” into shops on and off the field. Yiwu almost accounts for 70% of the entire World Cup peripheral commodities market. The diverse selection of goods includes the top 32 national flags, cheering horns and whistles, footballs, jerseys, scarves, winning trophies, ornaments, and pillows.

According to the statistics of Yiwu customs department, from January to August of this year Yiwu exported 3.82 billion RMB of sporting goods and 9.66 bn RMB of toys. 7.58 bn RMB went to Brazil, an increase of 56.7%, 1.39 bn RMB went to Argentina, an increase of 67.2%, and 4.29 bn RMB went to Spain, an increase of 95.8%.

From the colorful wigs of the World Cup in Korea and Japan to the various national flags of the World Cup in Germany and the trophy of the World Cup in Russia, the products made in Yiwu show great creativity.

At 2:30 p.m. on September 19, the sporting goods block in the third district of Yiwu’s International Trade city was full of atmosphere. Various colors of scarves, hats, flags, pendants, footballs, jerseys, and other sports goods related to the World Cup were sold by market merchants. The sporting area was placed in the center position of the store, and it is basically in a state of short supply. As early as a few months ago, many market operators were thinking about how to take advantage of this special period and sold related sporting goods to all parts of the world.

“Orders were placed in October, which was used to be a slow season. Now it is the peak season of this year. This pleasant result is brought by the World Cup,” said Chen Shaomei, who has been in the football business for 17 years, “It is estimated that we can sell more than 900,000 footballs this year, 200,000 more than last year. It’s attributed to the World Cup.” (By Wu Fengyu—Yiwu Commercial News, translated by Zhang Jiajia, edited by Daniel Haws)
