New Achevements of IASZNU

On March 6, 2018, the Enlarged Meeting of the Steering Committee of the China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program was held in Beijing. Dai Bing – Secretary General of the Chinese Follow-Up Committee of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Director of the Steering Committee of the China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program, and Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry chaired the meeting, during which he provided an overview of the current situation in Africa and of China’s work with Africa. He summarized the implementation progress of the annual project of the China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program in 2017 and mapped out the implementation schemes for 2018. About 60 people attended the meeting, including the principal of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, as well as department heads, experts, and scholars from member units of the Steering Committee of the China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program as well as from 30 domestic research institutes of African studies. Liu Hongwu—a member of the steering committee, Changjiang Scholar, and dean of the Institute of African Studies at Zhejiang Normal University (IASZNU)—attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

 

 

Dean Liu stated that IASZNU actively conducted research on Africa and built platforms for its research. He added that in 2018, the China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program should be focus on the central task of successfully hosting the 7th FOCAC Beijing Summit. He also provided an introduction to the preparation underway for the 7th FOCAC Beijing Summit and gave his suggestions on how to better implement China-Africa research.

IASZNU realized new achievements in implementing its annual projects in 2017. IASZNU undertook four projects in 2017. All of the projects were finished successfully and were approved by experts in the Department of African Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. Among the four projects, one was rated as excellent; two, very good; and one, good.

The projectThe Promotional Conference of Up and Out of Poverty by President Xi Jinping and the 6th China-Africa Think Tanks Forum (CATTF), which was undertaken by Liu Hongwu and Liu Guijin, was rated as excellent. The China-Africa High-Level Dialogue on Poverty Reduction and Development and the Think-Tank Forum for the project were held at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, on June 21 and June 22, 2017. Wang Yi, foreign minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, and Moussa Faki, chairman of the African Union Commission, attended the forum and gave speeches.

The China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program was officially launched at the 3rd CATTF and was held at Zhejiang Normal University in 2013. Yang Jiechi, former state councilor, and Zhai Jun, deputy director-general of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, attended the launch. Over the past five years, under the guidance of the Department of African Affairs, the program has greatly promoted the influence of China-Africa interaction and cooperation and has been providing thought on and knowledge about products in order to develop a healthy partnership between China and Africa.

IASZNU, one of the steering committee members of the China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program has made great contributions to the operations of the program. IASZNU has undertaken many projects and completed them efficiently. In addition, IASZNU has established the China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program Information Website (http://pdas.zjnu.edu.cn/), which can be viewed in both Chinese and English. The website is used to display IASZNU’s achievements, spread important news, and contact Chinese and African scholars.
