Wu Opera Begins Tour
Post Time: 01/06/2018

On May 21, The Legend of the White Snake (hereinafter White Snake) drama troupe of the Chen Meilan’s repertoire creation team of Zhejiang Wu Opera Academy started on its tour along the Belt and Road. They are heading to Zhengzhou, Xi’an, Lanzhou, and Xinjiang as their Silk Road Culture Tour.

Excellent display and exchange opportunities are offered to the domestic dramatic arts by the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the relevant strategy of the Publicity Department of the Party Committee—“bring honor to the Silk Road spirit, make the Belt and Road known, and prioritize culture.” For this “10,000 miles’ tour of the White Snake,” the plan has been selected into the National Art Fund Projects of 2017.

The White Snake is one of the four famous folklores in China’s Han ethnic area. It has been included in China’s first batch of China’s intangible cultural heritage. The play White Snake has become a classic in the repertoire of the Wu Opera after decades of polishing and staging, so audiences readily love it.

The tour will last two weeks. Besides White Snake, they will also perform Mu Guiying Heroine and excerpts from other famous plays. It not only offers the audience a different opera style that enjoys 500 years of history, along with unique art elements and regional play forms from Southern China; it can also promote the communication of culture and arts along the Silk Road and actively publicize Jinhua and Zhejiang.
