Booming Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Port
Post Time: 03/08/2018

Ningbo and Zhoushan are located in the west of Zhejiang, while Yiwu lies in the east. These three cities are all part of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and the Silk Road Economic Belt. Soon, the three cities will be connected through the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Corridor.

The sea-rail combined transportation service of the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Port recently upgraded from one shipment each day to two. With ten shipments each week, the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is at its full capacity on a regular basis. Up to the end of June, the business volume of the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Port exceeded 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) for the first time, further solidifying the status of Yiwu West Railway Station as the largest sea-rail combined transportation station in East China.

“In recent years, Jinhua has actively participated in the construction of the Belt and Road and accelerated the prosperous development of the open economy. The export volume of Jinhua ranks third in Zhejiang, and the export volume of Jinhua’s e-commerce business accounts for nearly half of the total export volume of Zhejiang’s e-commerce business. Therefore, Jinhua was given the title of the Most Vigorous City along the Belt and Road in China,” said the director of the Jinhua Modern Logistics Development and Management Office. He added that these benefits have come from the construction of the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Corridor.

Based on the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, the Yiwu Land Port, the Ningbo-Jinhua Expressway, and the Jinhua-Ningbo-Zhoushan Railway, the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Corridor is being built as a comprehensive transportation hub and a convenient and efficient traffic system.

The Ningbo-Zhoushan Port lies to the east of Jinyi Urban District and has the largest quantity of freight throughout in the world. On April 23, 2013, the sea-rail combined transportation route of the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Port started from Yiwu West Railway Station. Later, when Lanxi and urban Jinhua also launched the sea-rail combined transportation to the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, Jinhua completed the connection between land and sea ports.

In 2017, Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co., Ltd. cooperated with A.P. Moller - Maersk A/S and Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. to open five Yiwu-direction lines, which further advanced the extension of seaport services to the inland areas.

The extended services included promoting the construction of the import platform of Yiwu International Trade City, building an important hub for Chinese goods to enter the global market and for international goods to enter the Chinese market, and consolidating and enhancing the status of Yiwu as the world’s small commodity free trade center. Moreover, the services focused on four major fields—fashion consumer goods, information network economy, advanced equipment manufacturing, and food/medicine/healthaccelerated the construction of the New Silk Road District, the New Land Port District, and the New Science and Technology Innovation Area, and helped to build up pioneer cities along the Belt and Road, the international trade center, and national pilot reform areas.

Since the start of 2018, the Yiwu sea-rail combined transportation platform of Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co., Ltd. has actively responded to the Belt and Road Initiative, participating in the construction of the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Corridor and promoting the capacity and logistics efficiency of the sea-rail transportation business. The platform continues to enhance the capacity of railway transportation organization, and continuously improves the service efficiency of sea-rail transportation. On May 8, 2018, officials performed a trial operation of three shipments per day for the first time, creating a new record of delivering 280 TEUs in one day.

In terms of business, the platform has rewarded clients who completed their target business volume, which inspired enthusiasm in its clients. In addition, using the advantages of the warehouse of Yiwu West Station, the platform has improved its competitiveness.

In terms of operation, the platform has cooperated with the Jinhua Freight Center and the Yiwu Land Port Railway Station, looking for new breakthroughs in development. In addition, the platform has taken many new measures to smooth out the work process and improve its operating efficiency.

In the next step, the Yiwu sea-rail combined transportation platform will continue operating with three shipments per day on a regular basis, making Yiwu a model for the sea-rail combined transportation business of the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port.

By 2020, Jinhua will have built the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Corridor as a demonstrative area for international cooperation in production capacity and for the reform of the open economy system. (By Zhou Xuan, translated by Jin Haiqiong, edited by Kendra Fiddler)
