Yiwu International Half Marathon

On November 18, the 2018 “Yiwugo.com” Yiwu International Half Marathon themed “Run for the New Silk Road” kicked off in Yiwu with around 15,000 participants.

On the same day, a “Glory Cup” Yiwu/Madrid mini-marathon was held in Madrid, Spain. The two sister events were held to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the first running of the Yiwu–Madrid China Railway Express (CRE). For the first time in the event’s history, Yiwu worked alongside Madrid to hold a sports event overseas, which also marked China’s first experience of jointly holding a marathon in Europe.

The half marathon drew runners from 40 countries and regions, including Kazakhstan, Germany, France, and other countries along the CRE route. The event included three programs: half marathon, mini-marathon, and parent-child marathons. The half marathon route, which started at Yiwu Meihu Sports Center, saw participants run past the International Trade City, Yiwu Port, Jiangbin Theme Park, and other landmarks in Yiwu.In the end, two Ethiopian athletes won the race. Sikiyas Misganaw Abate, the male winner, finished first among all runners, clocking an impressive 1:04:16, and Yenenesh Tilahun Dinkesa became the female winner with a time of 1:11:00. Lu Guang and Liu Meng were the first male and female finishers among Chinese athletes, running 1:08:29 and 1:19:07, respectively. (By Yingyue, translated by Sun Yin, edited by Kendra Fiddler)
