Ueda Makoto’s Lecture on Bacterial Warfare
Post Time: 09/05/2018

In the afternoon of March 29, the 97th lecture of Yiwu’s City forum, titled “Bacterial Warfare of the Japanese Army and Plague in Chongshan Village,” was held at the library of Yiwu, which drew representatives from the bacterial warfare victims’ communities and teachers and students in Yiwu.

Ueda Makoto said, “Today, I have come here to present the history of the bacterial warfare that happened in the village of Chongshan in Yiwu. You must remember this history.” Ueda Makoto, professor of literature at Japan’s Rikkyo University, came to China around 1976. For more than 30 years, he has been researching the history of rural areas of China. Since May of 1998, he has conducted several investigations on the plague victims in Chongshan and the surrounding villages in Yiwu. On November 15, 2000, at the 17th court hearing of “Civil action of Chinese victims’ claims for Japanese bacterial warfare” in Tokyo District Court, Ueda appeared as an expert witness to testify and provided strong evidence for the plaintiff, China. With his efforts, in 2005, Shimizu Academy compiled the criminal history of the Japanese army’s bacterial warfare into a history textbook for Japanese higher education.
