American “Friends” in Yiwu
Post Time: 29/05/2018

At Yiwu Industrial & Commercial College (YICC), two American teachers, Greg and Joe, knew each other before moving to China. Because Greg was interested in Chinese culture, he came to China first. Then he invited Joe, who was still in the United States, to come.

In this way, the lives of two old acquaintances coincided again in China. They worked and traveled together in China and eventually settled in Yiwu, becoming teachers of spoken English at YICC. Their students are very fond of their classes. This could not be achieved without their long-term devotion, comprehensive preparation for lessons, and multiple modes of teaching. They enjoy the human connection in Yiwu, and they also have witnessed the rapid development of this city. However, it is a common regret for both men that they haven’t learned Chinese well yet although they have been in China many years.

In Yiwu, a small city in Zhejiang, there are many foreigners living and working like Greg and Joe. They are subtly affecting the city and also witnessing its quick development. Nearly 500,000 merchants come to Yiwu each year to do business, and nearly 20,000 settle in Yiwu from more than 200 countries and regions. Thus, Yiwu is becoming more and more international.
