“Jinhua Deer” Runs at Asian Games
Post Time: 07/09/2018

On the evening of August 30, the women’s 1500 meter event at the 18th Asian Games was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. In Tanlizheng Village, Wucheng District, the villagers were as excited as the live audience, because Zheng Xiaoqian, representing China in the women’s 1500m event, comes from Tianlizheng. Xiaoqian took fifth place.

“Whether she is the champion or not, she is the best in my eyes,” said Zheng Zhijun, Xiaoqian’s father. “Now I’m waiting for her return.”

Xiaoqian is the only athlete from Jinhua to be selected as a Chinese delegate. There were two Chinese athletes taking part in the Women’s 1500 meters.

At 7:30 p.m., many villagers were already gathered at the entrance of the Cultural Hall. The TV was on CCTV-5. The Party branch of the village organized the event so Party members and villagers could watch the live broadcast and cheer for Xiaoqian.

At 7:50 p.m., Zheng Xiaoqian’s parents and family also gathered for dinner, waiting to watch the event with everyone. They did not dare to contact their daughter in the days leading up to the race, afraid to disturb her training.

Ni Wenxian, Xiaoqian’s next-door neighbor, said, “I feel that she is still that little girl. But guess what? Our little girl has become a national athlete, and is running in the Asian Games for our country! In my eyes she’s still that little girl, nice and kind.”

“Xiaoqian studies very hard. She’s a beautiful girl, friendly to everyone. She started sports training when she was a primary student. Since then, we haven’t seen her very much, but every time she comes back, she always smiles and says hello to us,” said one of the villagers.

Xiaoqian, nicknamed “Jinhua’s Deer,” has won races and meets in China, Japan, and South Korea, as well as at the National Youth Athletics Championships and the National Athletics Grand Prix. (By Tang Xuyu, translated by Li Ziyi, edited by Kendra Fiddler)
