“China-Africa Night” Carnival
Post Time: 09/10/2018

On the evening of September 9, the “China-Africa Night” Carnival co-hosted by the Jinhua Municipal People’s Government and Zhejiang Normal University (ZNU) was held at Jiangbei Pedestrian Street, Jinhua. Tao Yeping, deputy mayor of Jinhua; Jin Yan, deputy secretary-general of Jinhua Municipal People’s Government; Zhong Shijie, director of Jinhua Cultural Radio and the Press and Publication Bureau; Zhu Jian, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of ZNU, attended the opening ceremony.

As the first activity of the “China-Africa Cultural Cooperation Exchange Week”, this carnival was divided into four parts: “African Song and Dance Show”; “African Customs and Practices Show”; “African Food Banquet”; and “Africa Experience Zone”. People of Jinhua enjoyed a feast of African culture and art through the African dance, music, food and art pieces shared by African students from ZNU.

The international students from Tanzania expressed their appreciation for this carnival, which offered them an opportunity to share the traditional culture of their country. A student from Ethiopia remarked that, “This event is awesome, which connects China and Africa closer.” The international students from Zimbabwe sang Chinese and African songs on the stage. While they were singing Friends (a Chinese song), they shouted out: “I love China! I love Africa!”

The theme of the 2018 Jinhua China-Africa Cultural Cooperation Exchange Week was “Win-Win Cooperation and Build a Closer China-Africa Community with a Shared Future”. During the exchange week, a series of activities were held —China-Africa Cultural Economic and Trade Forum, China-Africa Cultural Cooperation and Exchange Model Zone Construction Seminar, China-Africa Film Exhibition, “Visual Africa” Art Work Exhibition, and Open Week of the Museum of Africa. This “China-Africa Night” Carnival is one event in this series, and many international students from ZNU, who are from 12 African countries like Cameroon, Ghana, and Tanzania, participated in this activity.

This carnival was broadcast on a live webcast. Up to 21:00 on September 9, already 777,800 people have watched the “China-Africa Night” Carnival on 10 online platforms. Among them, 449,000 people watched it on NetEase News; 153,000 people on Phoenix News; and 115,000 people on CCTV News.

After the end of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, in order to implement the spirit of President Xi’s keynote speech, Jinhua Municipal People’s Government together with ZNU, organized “China-Africa Cultural Cooperation Exchange Week” and launched a series of cultural activities which were both academic and mass-oriented. These activities have multilevel functions: they are powerful measures to implement the Zhejiang Party Committee and the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government’s deployment of constructing Jinhua to be a model zone for cultural cooperation and exchange between China and Africa; they are effective measures to meet the Jinhua Municipal People’s Government’s requirements to answer the call of the national strategic plan of the “Belt and Road Initiative”; they are also effective carriers for strengthening cooperation and exchanges in various fields between China and Africa.
