Toronto Professor Lectures at ZNU
Post Time: 03/01/2018

On December 2, Professor Earl Woodruff, director of the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at Toronto University, gave a lecture titled “Creating Students’ Scientific Understanding through Play and Discussion” in the Hangzhou College of Preschool Teacher Education of Zhejiang Normal University (ZNU). The lecture was presided over by Qin Jinliang, president of Hangzhou College. Students and teachers from the college attended the lecture.

Using the example of rainbows, Professor Woodruff explained that children are inclined to remember information that is vivid and interesting instead of boring theoretical knowledge. Then, he elucidated four relationships between emotion and interest level when children are playing and discussing: Hard Fun, Easy Fun, People Fun, and Serious Fun. Finally, he concluded that teachers should combine play, discussion, and children’s emotions together in teaching based on the four relationships. (Translated by Li Ziyi, edited by Kendra Fiddler)
