Africans in Yiwu Launches in Beijing
Post Time: 05/01/2018

On December 28, the launch ceremony of the film Africans in Yiwu was held in Beijing. Lin Yi, vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries; Kong Genhong, councilor of the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPC; and Yusuf Hassan Ibrahim, ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia, attended the ceremony.

Africans in Yiwu is a documentary co-directed by Dr. Zhang Yong and Dr. Hodan Osman Abdi from the Institute of African Studies at Zhejiang Normal University. It took more than two years to film and was strongly supported by the Yiwu government. It combines the Chinese and African film industries, along with the discipline of African studies in China, and tells the stories of Africans in Yiwu regarding six aspects: economics, society, marriage, education, food, and art.

Kong Genhong said that Africans in Yiwu let Africans in China voice their stories and feelings. Although it just tells small stories, the film presents an international, modern, and innovative Yiwu. As the saying goes, “A straw shows which way the wind blows”—behind the small story is a grand picture: Sino-African friendship and cooperation.

Yusuf Hassan Ibrahim said that this documentary is the epitome of the friendship between China and Africa. It records the real life of Africans in Yiwu, like a window into the change both in China and in Africa.

Co-produced by China and Africa, this documentary interacts with the everyday life, music, and customs in the different cultures. It has been shown and well-received at the Zanzibar International Film Festival, Somali Week Festival 2017 in London, and Lusaka International Film Festival in Zambia.

Africans in Yiwu will be broadcasted on CCTV-4 at 17:30–18:00 every Saturday. The first episode will be presented on January 6, 2018, and the second, third, and fourth episodes will be on January 13, January 20, and January 27. Each episode will be rebroadcasted at 09:30–10:00 the following Tuesday. It will also be on iQIYI and other online movie platforms. In addition, the film will be broadcasted on the Chinese film channel of more than 30 African countries. (By Wu Fengyu, translated by Li Ziyi, edited by Kendra Fiddler)
